Do you ever wonder just how safe it is to be out on the road? It seems like every time you turn on the news there has been an accident where someone was killed or seriously injured. In a recent press release the American Insurance Association based in Washington D.C. proved that just the opposite was true, that automobile related deaths and injuries are in fact declining.
AIA’s data shows that between 1968 and 2008 the number of fatalities had been cut from more than 150,000 to less than 38,000 last year. Injuries have also decreased from 169 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 1988 to 80 injuries per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2008. This decrease in automobile deaths and injuries is significant considering how many more drivers there are on the road today.
While this progress is significant and consoling accidents are still happening causing serious injuries and deaths. “We will keep pressing the case for increased safety measures, better vehicle designs, seatbelt use, and anti drunk driving measures… so that these fatality and injury rates continue to decline” said AIA vice president David Snyder.
