Did you know that 80% of Americans have suffered or will suffer from back pain in their life.  In fact it’s the #1 cause of missed work in America.  So, what causes back pain, and what should you know about it?  Dr. Dirk Woodmansee of the Midvalley Chiropractic Clinic recently published an article discussing just the that topic.

Back pain can be subdivided into two categories Chronic (long term pain, being longer than 3-4 weeks), and Acute pain (usually results from injury or trauma). Chronic pain can result from herniated discs (bulge or protrusion) which cause a lot of back pain because the bulge can press on nerves. Disc degeneration is another cause of low back pain.  Disc degeneration can be caused by dehydrated tissue in the spine.  Dehydration comes from lack of movement in the spine, constant sitting or laying on a bed.  Other causes of back pain are Spondylosis and Myofacial pain syndroms.  Spondylosis is a particularly dangerous condition. The term refers to a loss of fluid and height in the spine which usually comes from an injury that goes untreated, like injuries from car accidents.  When an injury goes untreated over time the injury becomes more and more aggravated leaving the injury seriously aggravated, more difficult to rehabilitate, and possibly scarred.
